Fiore Boutique’s Expert Tips for Long-Lasting Phalaenopsis Orchids at Home

The Phalaenopsis orchid, also known as the “Moth Orchid,” is one of the most elegant and long-lasting blooms you can have in your home. At Fiore Boutique, your trusted Windsor florist, these orchids are a favourite for both our in-store displays and online arrangements. Not only are they stunning, but they’re surprisingly easy to care for when you know the right tips!

Here’s how to ensure your Phalaenopsis orchid thrives for months to come.

1. Let Your Orchid Stay Root-Bound

Phalaenopsis orchids love being root-bound. This means keeping them in the garden pot they came in rather than repotting immediately. You can place this pot inside a decorative outer pot or glass vessel lined with moss. If needed, pack the space between the garden pot and outer display with paper, cardboard, or bubble wrap to keep it upright.

2. Water Sparingly — Orchids Prefer Neglect

Overwatering is one of the most common mistakes with Phalaenopsis orchids. These plants only need water when the sphagnum moss inside the pot is completely dry. Too much water can easily damage the roots.

3. Use the Soak-and-Dry Method

For best results, remove the garden pot from its outer display pot and soak it in water, allowing excess to drain completely before placing it back. The moss should feel moist but never soggy. Typically, watering every two weeks is enough, but always check the moss first.

4. Keep Them in a Warm, Humid Spot

As tropical plants, Phalaenopsis orchids thrive in warm and humid environments, away from drafts and direct sunlight. A bathroom with filtered light or a bright living space works perfectly.

5. Encourage Re-Blooming

Once flowers wilt, remove them from the stem. When the stem is bare, cut it just above the third node (small brown bump). Continue watering and fertilising, and your orchid will reward you with fresh blooms within a year.
